New CBCP President Romulo Valles Praises Preisident Duterte's 2nd SONA, Urges Constructive Criticisms

In a very rare chance, the leadership of Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) is starting to change its tone towards President Rodrigo Duterte, and urged constructive criticisms on his actions. This comes a day after the president delivered his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) last Monday, July 24 at the Batasan Pambansa.

"In general, the recent SONA of President Duterte is direct to the point and satisfactory. But while it is true that he used some unkind words, it only shows how displeased the president is in terms of peace and order situation in the country." New CBCP President Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles said in a statement, Tuesday morning via Radio Veritas.

“In these times of war against terrorism, crticis should help fight the real enemies, instead of just throwing stones at him. The Christians and Muslims in Mindanao are doing it, and therefore Filipinos elsewhere should also do it.” Archbishop Valles added, who will replace CBCP President Socrates Villegas on December 1, ending his second and last term.

Apparently, Archbishop Romulo Valles is said to be close with the Duterte family especially when President Duterte was still the mayor of Davao City. He led the prayers during the president's inauguration on June 30, 2016. Last March, he baptized Stonefish Duterte Carpio, son of Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte, President Duterte's daughter.

Besides cracking some jokes as President Duterte is known for, he mentioned some of the accomplishments under his administration and plans in the future. The tough-talking president also reiterated that his campaign against illegal drugs would be unrelentless despite widespread criticism, and urged his crtics not to trivialize his actions.

Meanwhile, there were mixed reactions following President Duterte's second SONA. As expected, opposition senators such as Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros criticized the president. "It’s akin to a bad open mic performance...All sound and fury, lacking in achievements for the bold promises he made." The Liberal Party (LP) ally senator said.
