Liberal International President Juli Minoves Not Allowed to Visit De Lima in Jail, Netizens React

Liberal International (LI) president Juli Minoves has been barred from visiting Senator Leila de Lima at the Philippine National Police (PNP) custodial center in Camp Crame. this Saturday, July 21. However, LI’s Human Rights Committee chair Markus Loening and Friedrich Naumann Foundation-Philippines president Wolfgang Heinze were allowed.

"We notified on Monday, so that is more than five days in advance than my coming here. I came especially for a meeting with Senator De Lima. Together with the Human Rights adviser (Loening), president of our committee in our organization," Minoves told reporters in an ambush interview, insisting that the Liberal Party (LP) senator is a political prisoner.

"They have used an administrative excuse that they cannot find the letter. General Philips [Chief Superintendent Philip Phillips], in fact, is hiding the fact that I am here and is trying to prevent me from entering and meeting Senator De Lima. This doesn’t happen normally in democracy, this only happens in regimes that are not democratic," he added.

"So, I protest and I am very disappointed by this but at the same time, people will realize, here and abroad how arbitrary this detention is," Minoves said, adding that police not allowing him to check De Lima's condition in jail means that there is no more presumption of innocence in the Philippines, and is therefore against any ruling in international law.

"More than 13.7 million people voted for Sen. De Lima and right now she should be fighting the extension of martial law in the Senate, not wasting her time sitting in prison. The charges against her are based solely on the conflicting testimonies of criminals." Loening said in a statement, with LI calling for the immediate release of the lady senator.

But while there were a few netizens who agree with them, most of them said that LI should not intervene with the problems of the country, especially in politics. Some of them even suggested that if they are really concern with the human rights of everyone, they should also have visited De Lima's former driver-bodyguard and lover, Ronnie Dayan.

This is our law in the philippines they will not put her to jail if there is not proven and no evidence that she is not a druglord protector..but all the evidence is cleared ..the video, the bank statement..the affairs on her body guard and the witnesses in munting lupa..and most of all she abuses her power to her selfish motivation against our president..so please give us a change to have a better country and the only change is dont intervene our president to his job to protect our country and people.People in the philippines are get fed up to all politicanss whos using only their
