Top 22 Possible Candidates to Run for Senator in 2019 Elections

Before we know it, it’s already 2019 mid-term elections here in the Philippines. As we all know, political parties are now carefully choosing their potential candidates to run for senator. And because politics today is always in the headlines, the voting public will only vote for 12 senators in 2019, the competition is being expected to be tough and controversial.

So far, the incumbent senators who cannot run for re-election are Senators Francis “Chiz” Escudero, Gregorio “Gringgo” Honasan, Loren Legarda, and Antonio Trillanes IV, because they are now in their second term. Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III should be in the list, but he did not complete his first term because he was proclaimed senator only in August 2011.

On the other hand, those who can run for re-elections are Senators Grace Poe, Sonny Angara, Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, Nancy Binay, Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito, and Cynthia Villar. This is because they were elected in 2013, and therefore can still be elected in 2019. We are pretty sure that all of them will grab the chance to enjoy another term.

We also know that President Rodrigo Duterte’s PDP-Laban is the ruling party. And while there are a lot of opposition parties such as Nacionalista Party (NP), the Liberal Party (LP) is considered as the main opposition. With that, we at PNC decided to make a list of 22 politicians and personalities who we think are potential senatoriables in the 2019 elections.

1. Senate President Koko Pimentel (PDP-Laban, if Comelec allows him to run)

2. Sen. Grace Poe (NPC)

3. Sen. Sonny Angara (LDP)

4. Sen. Bam Aquino (LP)

5. Sen. Nancy Binay (UNA)

6. Sen. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito (Possible to run under PDP-Laban)

7. Sen. Cynthia Villar (NP)

8. Negros Occidental 3rd District Rep. Albee Benitez (PDP-Laban)

9. First transgender politician, Bataan 1st District Rep. Geraldine Roman, (PDP-Laban)

10. Davao City 1st District Representative Karlo Nograles (PDP-Laban)

11. Former MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino (PDP-Laban)

12. House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas (PDP-Laban)

13. DILG Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Diño (PDP-Laban)

14. Communications Undersecretary Mocha Uson (PDP-Laban)

15. Former DILG Secretary Mar Roxas (LP)

16. Former Quezon Representative Erin Tañada (LP)

17. Actor Dingdong Dantes (LP)

18. Former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos (NP, if he loses electoral protest vs VP Leni Robredo)

19. Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos (NP)

20. Former senator, now Taguig City Rep Pia Cayetano

21. Former DENR Secretary Gina Lopez

22. Former DSWD Secretary Judy Taguiwalo

We actually have more names on our mind. However, the names above are today’s most familiar faces in the political arena. We also did not include other showbiz personalities other than Dingdong Dantes simply because so far, he is the only one that’s close to politics. So, what do you think of our list? Who among them do you think will surely run and eventually win?
