Comelec Chairman Andy Bautista Resigns, VP Robredo Now Worried on Bongbong Marcos’ Electoral Protest

Comelec (Commission on Elections) Chairman Andres “Andy” Bautista resigned from his post this Wednesday, October 11. The Comelec chief publicly announced his resignation via his open letter posted on his social media accounts. The move came less than a month after the House of Representatives junked an impeachment complaint against him.

“It is with my deep sadness that I am informing you about my decision to resign as the chair of the Commission on Elections by the end of the year. After much prayer and discernment, I believe that this is the right time to step down given the postponement of the Barangay and SK elections.” Chairman Andy Bautista said, saying that his decision to resign was not easy.

“I believe I have served our Commission well and the Filipino people to the best of my ability, but only with your faithful help and constant support.” The embattled Comelec chief added, noting that the May 2016 elections is a testament for the hard work and sacrifices of the office under his leadership, and thanked his Comelec family for standing with him.

“Amid the hurtful, baseless and malicious accusations hurled against me, most of you never left my side. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, my Comelec family. It has been a joy and privilege to work for, and serve with you,” he added, referring to the accusations of his wife, Patricia that he has nearly P1 billion worth of ill-gotten wealth deposited in several banks.

Shortly after Bautista announced his resignation, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said that Malacañang respects his decision, while Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo dubbed it as “an honorable exit.” Senate minority leader Franklin Drilon also called it as a “right move.” However, Vice President Leni Robredo has a different opinion.

“Alam naman nating lahat na pangarap nila yan, na isa-isahin ang mga hadlang sa nais nilang mangyari. Bagama’t ginagalang ko ang pasya ni Andy, medyo nangangamba tayo sa posibleng maging resulta ng electoral protest (ni Bongbong Marcos). Syempre, ang ipapalit ng pangulo ay yung kaalyado nya. Nakakatakot, diba?” VP Robredo said in an ambush interview.
