PLDT, Smart Could Lose Thousands of Subscribers After Hiring Kris Aquino as Brand Ambassador, Analyst Says

PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications could lose thousands of subscribers after these two giant telecommunication companies hired Kris Aquino as their latest brand ambassador. This is according to a marketing analyst who has read the tons of negative comments on the Facebook posts of PLDT and Smart about hiring Kris as product endorser.

“This is super exciting for me because PLDT is really a big part of our home and our family, so to be officially an ambassador is a huge honor. I can’t wait to share my own stories about how technology affects the way I raise my children and the way we communicate.” Kris Aquino said during the PLDT-Smart event last Wednesday, October 25.

“Everything now is digital. You know how watching TV has shifted over to binge-watching in gadgets? That’s the same pivot I see for my digital needs. With Smart’s reliable LTE speed, I know that reaching a broader audience, particularly the millennials, is now a lot easier.” The 46-year old actress and former presidential sister and TV host added.

Kris Aquino now joins PLDT Home celebrity ambassadors including Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, Vic Sotto, Jericho Rosales, among others; as well as Smart’s celebrity ambassadors Matteo Guidicelli, James Reid, Nadine Lustre, Maja Salvador, Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, who is now the top product endorser in the country.

But while PLDT-Smart FVP and Head of Consumer Business for Market Development Oscar A. Reyes, Jr. said that Kris Aquino is very much welcome to be their newest brand ambassador, marketing analyst Reuben de Guia has a different opinion. According to him, Kris is still somehow a reliable brand ambassador, but noting that the timing is not right.

“Whether we like it not, a lot of netizens are now more aware about politics. As I have read their comments, most of them said PLDT and Smart should have spent the money in improving their services instead of hiring Kris (Aquino). I hate to say this, but I think hundreds or probably thousands of their customers will switch to other telcos.” He said.
