President Duterte Sends Flowers for Ninoy and Cory, Ferdinand Marcos, VP Leni Robredo Reacts

President Rodrigo Duterte sent flowers for the late President Corazon “Cory” Aquino and Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. on Tuesday evening, October 31, as observance to All Saints Day’. Kris Aquino, the daughter of Ninoy and Cory, has expressed gratitude to the kindness of the president. However, Vice President Leni Robredo could not help but react.

“This is a simple post coming from a daughter who will always feel GRATITUDE whenever her beloved parents are shown respect. Maraming salamat po Pangulong Duterte,” Kris Aquino wrote on Instagram on Tuesday, as a caption to the photo of the graves of her parents. Also shown are flowers with a wreath bearing the name of President Duterte.

It can be recalled that Ninoy Aquino was assassinated at the Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983. His death triggered the anger of many Filipinos, until then-President Ferdinand Marcos declared a snap election. Cory, Ninoy’s widow, ran for president against Marcos, and led to EDSA People Revolution in 1986, and Cory became president.

On the other hand, Cory Aquino passed away due to colon cancer on August 1, 2009. Her body was buried beside Ninoy’s grave at the Manila Memorial Park. And because it was election year the following year, then DILG-Secretary Mar Roxas gave way for Noynoy Aquino, who ran for president under the Liberal Party (LP) and eventually won.

Meanwhile, President Duterte has also sent flowers at the graves of former Presidents Elpidio Quirino, Diosdado Macapagal, and Carlos Garcia. Later, Duterte and former President Joseph “Erap” Estrada also sent flowers for the grave of the late President Marcos, whose body was finally buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani last November 18.

When sought for reaction, VP Leni Robredo applauded President Duterte’s kindness. According to her, the president has just shown respect to the former leaders of the country. However, she somehow doubted the president’s sincerity in sending flowers for Ninoy and Cory, who are also both parents of former President Noynoy Aquino.

“Nakakatuwa din naman ang ating president sa kanyang pagbibigay galang sa ating mga yumaong pangulo. Sana nga lang ay taos-puso ito at walang halong pagpapa-pogi.” VP Robredo said in an ambush interview after she visited the grave of her late husband, former DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo, adding that President Duterte did not send flowers for him.
