Trillanes Files Libel Case vs Thinking Pinoy RJ Nieto, Seeks P2 Million Moral Damages, Nieto Responds

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Wednesday, November 22 filed a libel case against Thinking Pinoy blogger RJ Nieto, who posted on his Facebook page titled, “Trump calls Trillanes a Drug Lord.” The Liberal Party (LP) ally senator filed the case before the Pasay City Regional Trial Court, seeking payment of P2 million for moral and exemplary damages.

In his Facebook post last October 31, RJ Nieto cited a local report stating that US President Donald Trump allegedly called Sen. Trillanes a drug lord. “Does Trump’s government know something?” Thinking Pinoy wrote on his post, and included the links of news reports from Pilipino Star Ngayon and Philippine Star, as his sources of Trump’s statement.

“Having posted in the Facebook account of Respondent Nieto in the internet, this malicious imputation was published far and wide and all over the world.” Sen. Trillanes said in his complaint against Nieto, who is known for being a staunch critic of LP and a supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte. He once appeared as resource speaker in a Senate hearing on fake news.

“Being a very vocal and staunch critic of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, of whom Respondent Nieto is a self-confessed diehard supporter and defender, Respondent Nieto’s post was clearly made solely for the purpose of besmirching my reputation and maligning my name,” Trillanes added, who also asking for P250,000 in attorney’s fees.

“Needless to state, since the Respondent Nieto caused the publication of the derogatory post through the electronic medium (i.e., using a computer system), respondent is clearly guilty of the cybercrime offense of LIBEL, as defined and penalized under the Cybercrime Prevention Act,” he said further. Shortly after, RJ Nieto responded via a Facebook post.

“I have yet to receive a copy of Antonio "Sonny" Trillanes IV's libel complaint, but wouldn't it be fun if it starts with, "This is where your taxes go."? Thinking Pinoy wrote as a caption to a photo of Sen. Trillanes. Earlier, the senator also filed libel complaint against Communications Assistant Secretary Mocha Uson for spreading his alleged bank accounts.
