Cory Aquino Freed Joma Sison, NPA Leader Kumander Dante, and Allowed the Return of Nur Misuari

On March 5, 1986, then-President Corazon “Cory” Aquino ordered the release of Jose Maria Sison, the founder of Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), and Bernabe Buscayno aka Kumander Dante, leader of CPP’s armed group New People's Army (NPA). She also allowed the return of Nur Misuari, founder of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).

“First time nung makilala ko si Cory nung 1967. Dumalaw ako kay Ninoy Aquino. Siya [Cory] ang nagsilbi nung kape kaya natatawa ako noong sinasabi na siya ang nagsisilbi dun sa ibang bisita,” Joma Sison in an interview with ABS-CBN’s Balitang Europe on August 3, 2009, two days after President Cory Aquino passed away due to colon cancer.

“Nung ma-release ako, dun sa penthouse ng Cojuangco building ako na-release at dun kami nagtagpo sa presidente, kay Cory. Kung maalala ko, released ako on recognizance to Doña Aurora Aquino, Pati na dun sa cancellation ng passport ko siyempre in public pupunahin ko ‘yon na ginawa ni Cory.” The CPP founder added.

“Mabuti daw na nandito ako dahil ang mga militar ang nagtutulak na kanselahin ang passport ko so ganun, hindi nawawala yung aming mabuting relasyon kahit na gumawa siya ng official act na kanselahin ang aking passport,” Sison said, who was arrested in 1977. After his release, he went into self exile in Netherlands, and never came back since then.

Sison, a former teacher of President Rodrigo Duterte, also believed to have been released for the sake of "national reconciliation" and for his role in fighting against President Ferdinand Marcos. He and his wife Julie de Lima (Sen. Leila de Lima’s aunt) were among those who coordinated with various groups and politicians to oust President Marcos.

Along with Sison and Buscayno, Cory Aquino also ordered the release of two members of the so-called Communist assassination team, Alex Berondo and Ruben Alegre. Then in September 1986, Aquino allowed Nur Misuari to return to the Philippines, upon the advice of her brother-in-law, Butz Aquino, and then Interior Secretary Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel.
