As you can see, tons of people gathered around President Duterte’s pick-up truck and were free to take videos and photos of him, as he was about to enter the cemetery. Nevertheless, no one including the media was allowed to follow him when he went inside to visit the grave of his parents, the late Gov. Vicente Duterte and Soledad Duterte.
And just like any ordinary Filipino, President Duterte regularly visits his parents’ tomb not only on All Saints' Day, but also on their birthdays and death anniversaries. Last year, the president was accompanied by his youngest son, Sebastian “Baste” Duterte. That time, reporters saw him bowing on his parents’ grave and even kissed the marble casing.
When asked by reporters if he wants to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) when his time comes, President Duterte said he prefers to be buried beside his parents. “The greatest honor a man can have is to be buried from where he came from. Katabi nanay at tatay ko.” He said, who cried when he visited him shortly after winning the elections.
Meanwhile, President Duterte has kept his promise to live a simple life despite being the most powerful man in the country. Back in June 2016, before heading to Malacanang for the first time as president, he noted that he will still use his black Isuzu pickup truck instead of a presidential car, simply because he is already used to it.
"I will keep my pick up because this is what I’m used to. I’ve been using the pickup since 1988. Even though I will become President, I will still use my pick up. I told the people in Malacañang that I will not ride in their Mercedes-Benz vehicles because all who rode in those vehicles didn’t have much luck in life. Ousted. Sent to jail." He said at that time.
