Maria Isabel Lopez Defends Mariel de Leon From Bashers, “Mga Bayaran Sila, Inggit Lang sa Beauty Mo”

Former beauty queen and actress Maria Isabel Lopez could not help but defend Mariel de Leon, who lost in the Miss International 2017 beauty contest, held in Japan last Tuesday, November 14. In fact, she did not even make it to the Top 15. Shortly after the pageant, netizens slammed de Leon with most of them celebrating instead of being sad for her loss.

“I’m so proud of how far I’ve come, how hard I fought and how much I grew and transformed! Strong, empowered, and brave is the new sexy. I know that every time I step on the stage it's a real gift, so I try not to take it for granted, and I try to make it an experience that the public can really participate in." De Leon wrote on Instagram.

Mariel, who is the daughter of actor Christopher de Leon and actress Sandy Andolong, is a staunch critic of the Duterte administration. Last May, she was heavily criticized when she questioned the appointment of Mocha Uson as Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) assistant secretary, and called her bias and uneducated.

Last Tuesday, November 14, Davao City Mayor Inday Sara Duterte shared on Facebook a photo of de Leon revealing a chubby face, and appeared to be happy that Mariel had lost. Almost at the same time, pro-Duterte bloggers and netizens also rejoiced, saying that Mariel is very arrogant and does not deserve to win Miss International crown.

Meanwhile, Maria Isabel Lopez expressed her sadness on the way fellow Filipinos have reacted over Mariel’s loss. In her Facebook post this Friday, the Bb. Pilipinas 1982 winner and the country’s representative for Miss Universe in 1982 advised Mariel not to mind her bashers, and continue to express her thoughts on social and political issues.

“Congrats, girl at go lang ng go! Karamihan sa kanila ay mga binayaran lang naman para ipagtanggol ang pangulo. Wag mo silang intindihin, inggit lang sila sa tapang at beauty mo.” Lopez wrote, who is now in trouble with the LTO after she removed the traffic cones along EDSA last Saturday, and used the ASEAN lanes. Her post was immediately deleted.
