Trillanes Returns From Vienna, DFA Officials Confiscate His Passport

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has returned to the Philippines after spending five days in Vienna, Austria. He was spotted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Tuesday morning, March 20. However, an official from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said that the passport of the Liberal Party (LP) ally senator was confiscated from him.

“Yes, we confiscated his (Trillanes) passport upon the order of DFA Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano, in coordination with Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III. The senator did not resist and surrendered it to us voluntarily, after we explained to him why.” A DFA official at NAIA who only introduced himself as “Jerry” told reporters.

“Sorry, but I am not in the right authority to reveal further details,” The DFA official replied, when asked why there was such order, and if Trillanes’ passport will still be returned to him. On the other hand, the senator’s bodyguards did not allow the reporters to ask him. However, his staff said that he will explain everything in his privilege speech this week.

As earlier reported, Sen. Trillanes went to Vienna to attend last March 15 to attend a crime and drugs conference at the United Nation (UN) office. There, he discussed the alleged extrajudicial killings (EJKs) related to President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs. However, Duterte supporters suggested that the senator only lied about the data.

Meanwhile, Sen. Trillanes is now facing inciting to sedition charges for allegedly encouraging the military to shoot President Duterte filed by the Pasay City Prosecutor's Office. The complaint stemmed from his privilege speech last October, wherein he accused Duterte of having bank transactions of more than P2 billion from 2006 to 2015.

Before leaving for Vienna, Trillanes said he is not afraid and that he will face the charges. He said that this is another form of harassment against Duterte critics like him. “If the purpose of this is to scare me to back away from criticizing Duterte, well, like I said before, the more I’m energized to stand against what’s wrong and evil.” He said.
