PNP Chief Bato Dela Rosa’s Son Might Not Pass PNP Academy Due to Low Grades, Trillanes Reacts

Rock dela Rosa, the only son of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa, might not be able to follow the footsteps of his father. This is after he had very low grades at the PNP Academy (PNPA). In fact, Bato’s son now needs to take a removal exam to determine whether he shall pass or fail his course.

According to Politiko.com.ph, a source provided them a list of the so-called “deficient cadets” of the PNPA Class of 2021, where Rock dela Rosa is included. This is because he had a final grade of 6.881 this semester. And to be able to take the prerequisite subjects, he should first pass the removal exam for his Communication Arts 2 subject.

Rock dela Rosa joined the PNPA in May 2017. And despite being the son of the highest PNP official in the country, he went through intense physical activity in 8 different stations just like any ordinary recruit, and had his head shaved. In an earlier interview, he said that his father did not push him to become a policeman, and that it is own will.

Rock is the youngest of the three children of Bato and Nancy Johnson Comandante. The couple got married in 1989, and then-Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte stood as one of the principal sponsors in their wedding. Macky dela Rosa, their second to the oldest child is now completing her military pilot training with the Philippine Air Force.

Meanwhile, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has an unsolicited advice to PNP chief Bato. In an ambush interview with the Liberal Party (LP) ally senator on Friday, he said that as a father, he understands the pressure of being son of a country’s top police official. He added that his children have somehow experiencing the same problems as students.

“Bilang isang ama na isa ding public servant tulad niya (PNP Chief Bato), matindi talaga ang pressure sa anak na gustong sundan ang yapak ng mga kanyang mga magulang. Alam ko din naman na di nya pinilit ang anak niya na maging pulis din gaya niya. Gaya sa mga anak ko, wala silang mababang grades kasi gusto talaga nila ang kurso nila.” Trillanes said.

(As a father who is also a public servant like him (PNP Chief Bato), the pressure on a child who wants to follow the footsteps of their parents is really tough. I know that he did not force his son to become a cop like him. Just like my children, they have no failing grades because they really like the courses they took.)

“So sa akin, sana mag-usap lang sila mag-ama ng masinsinan. Kung tingin niya na yung anak ay dapat nang magpalit ng course, dapat suportahan niya pa rin all the way. (For me, I hope they can have an intensive father-and-son talk. If he thinks his son needs to shift to another course, he should still support him all the way.)” He added.
