Hontiveros to Ban Bathing Suit in Public Swimming Pools, Beach Resorts

Akbayan Senator Risa Hontiveros plans to ban bathing suits in swimming pools and beach resorts all over the country. According to her, women should not wear provocative attire when going to swimming to avoid attracting perverts. Her proposal comes as part of her supposed contribution in celebration with National Women's Month this March.

Hontiveros told reporters, Saturday.

(We all know that it is natural for men to have a malicious mind when they see beautiful legs or cleavage. As a woman, it is my responsibility to protect other women from perverts, especially that summer is near and many people will go to the beach.)

She added.

(I just want to clarify as early as this time that I will not ban all kinds of bathing suits, but only the provocative ones, and those that when wore show the entire body of a woman. Now, if it looks decent, of course, that’s Ok. My only purpose is to protect women from being offended.)

Hontiveros, who is also chair of the Senate Committee on Women and Children, noted that her proposal also covers public swimming pools and related establishments. According to her, she was inspired by President Rodrigo Duterte’s strict implementation of “no swimsuit” policy for beauty contests in Davao when he was still the city mayor.

(Being in the Opposition does not mean I’m always opposing the president. Of course, if his actions produce good results, I will support him.) Hontiveros said further.
