Hontiveros Wants to Ban Ice Candy, Street Food Vendors on Anti Duterte RevGov Rally, Bam Aquino Disagrees

Senator Risa Hontiveros allegedly want to ban all street food vendors, including those who will attempt to sell ice candy in the upcoming protest rally against President Rodrigo Duterte tomorrow, Thursday, November 30. However, her fellow senator Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, who will also join the said rally, strongly disagreed with her proposal.

Sen. Bam Aquino is under the Liberal Party (LP), while Sen. Risa Hontiveros is under Akbayan, and known to be an LP ally. They are only among the opposition senators who will join the anti-Duterte RevGov rally, which will be attended by members of militant groups such as Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan).

The said protesters are expected to go against the gathering of tons of Duterte supporters who wanted the president to declare revolutionary government (RevGov). Interestingly, there were rumors that President Duterte will declare RevGov tomorrow. This is despite the fact that the president himself said he will declare it only if he feels it is necessary.

Meanwhile, an aide of Hontiveros said that the lady senator will not allow any street vendor in the said rally. According to a certain Loida, the Akbayan senator has once eaten an ice candy during a rally, and suffered from amoebiasis, a parasitic infection caused by contaminated water. She added that Hontiveros was not hospitalized, but left the rally early.

On the other hand, Sen. Aquino opposed her proposal. According to the LP senator, a lot of street vendors are earning well during protest rallies. “Pag di natin sila pinayagan, sayang naman ang posibleng kitain nila, malaking kawalan din yun sa kanila. Siguro, mas maganda kung pumili na lang ng mabuti bago bumili,” He said in an ambush interview.

Aquino, a cousin of former President Noynoy Aquino, is known for being concern with the food for the poor. Back in July 2016, he filed Senate Bill NO. 357, or the Zero Food Waste Act. Under his bill, food manufacturers, supermarkets, restaurants, cafeterias, and hotels shall give their surplus food to food banks instead of throwing them away.
