Hontiveros’ 30,000 Expected Participants of ‘Heal Our Land’ Impossible, Organizer Cries Lack of Budget

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and Opposition group Tindig Pilipinas are inviting everyone to attend “Heal Our Land” activity this Sunday, November 5. The event is set to start at 3 pm via a mass at EDSA People Power Shrine, and later a one-kilometer procession to the People Power monument for a cultural program.

“I am inviting you and the communities with you to participate in the second phase of this period of praying for the victims of extrajudicial killings. We will start on November 5 until December 8, the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception,” CBCP President Archbishop Socrates Villegas said in a statement last October 12.

“We thank the Church for its firm position against the culture of violence and senseless killings in our nation. It is time we stand together, set aside our differences, and affirm the importance of life and human rights.” LP said in a statement, as it announced full support to the said event, and inviting all Filipinos to unite for the so-called “healing” of the country.

“The procession tomorrow is the public’s solidarity with the extrajudicial killings (EJKs) victims and their families. We need to bring back our collective conscience as Filipinos,” Liberal Party (LP) ally Senator Hontiveros said, who has been blaming President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs for the killings of drug suspects in several parts of the country.

According to Hontiveros, she is expecting 30,000 people to attend the said event, noting that she believes that CBCP President Archbishop Socrates Villegas has a strong influence to Catholics. However, one of the event organizers said that the expected figure is very much impossible to reach due to lack of budget for the allowances of the attendees.

“Napakahirap mag-imbita, tapos napakaliit pa ng budget na ni-release nila. Assume na lang natin na P500 ang bawat isa, tapos magbabayad ka pa sa sasakyan na susundo sa mga manggaling sa malayo. Tantiya ko nga, wala pang 3,000 ang pupunta.” A certain Ismaelito Olarte said, adding that he only accepted the task because he has no permanent job.
