In a press conference, Pasig City Police Chief Senior Supt. Orlando Yebra said that Oavenada, a truck driver, was arrested on Sunday at around 9:30 a.m. inside Timber Port Enterprises compound on Ortigas Avenue Extension in Barangay Rosario. He noted that Oavenada denied participating in the crime, but the suspect was tested positive for drugs.
“We expect that he would not admit to what he did. However, the evidence points to him, so there’s nothing he can do about it,” Yebra said, noting that he follow-up operation came after PNP-Crime Lab revealed that Oavenada’s fingerprints matched those that were found on the cellphone and body of Cama, who was found dead near their house last November 12.
Cama, who had just started working as a teller at Malayan Bank in Makati City for only a week, was found inside a garage inside a compound of Mega Bus Lines, in Barangay Rosario. Her face was deformed, her lower body was burned, and her underwear and shorts were found beside her. Authorities believed that the victim was raped before she was killed.
Earlier, Oavenada earlier told police that on the night of November 10, he saw mechanic Diolan Acebuche, who also lives in the compound, standing behind Cama while she was texting on her way home. However, authorities doubted his statements as they were inconsistent and conflicting. The suspect is now detained at the Pasig City Police Station.
Meanwhile, CHR chairman Chito Gascon said he will send some personnel to closely monitor the inquest proceedings on Oavenada. “But while we join the nation in condemning the killing; we only want to make sure that the rule of law will be implemented. Ang worry kasi namin, baka patayin ang suspect tapos sasabihin na naman nila, nanlaban.” He told reporters.
