VP Vote Recount Starts, Marcos Votes Leading vs Robredo

The manual vote recount for the May 2016 election has started this Monday, April 2, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with Supreme Court (SC), sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal (PET). But this early, poll recount results show that former Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is leading by far against Vice President Leni Robredo.

Apparently, lawyers of both camps said that they are confident that their clients won the vice-presidential race. "We have endured two years of waiting due to Robredo's habitual and intentional moves to delay the election protest and deliberate attempts to bury the truth," Marcos' legal counsel and spokesperson Vic Rodriguez said Monday morning.

"We are very, very confident, and we're happy that the revision and the recount will start… because of the fact that we will be able to prove to the entire Filipino people that our client, the Vice President, won in a legitimate election," This recount will also expose that Mr. Marcos’ accusations are all lies.” VP Robredo's lawyer Romulo Macalintal said.

With the recount of votes now being held at the gymnasium on the 5th Floor of the SC-Court of Appeals (CA) Building on Padre Faura, Manila, the PET is set to review a total of 5,418 ballot boxes from Camarines Sur, Iloilo, and Negros Oriental. They were the 3 pilot provinces that Bongbong Marcos had chosen for the initial ballot recount.

So far, the PET is doing the manual vote recount for 1,400 ballot boxes from Camarines Sur, a province in Bicol region which is being believed to be a solid vote for VP Robredo. Once it is done, the ballot boxes from Iloilo, and Negros Oriental will be retrieved and will undergo the similar process, with PET to set the schedule.

Meanwhile, a witness in the ongoing vote recount said that so far, the votes for Marcos is way ahead against Robredo. According to Atty. Diosdado Señales, an independent lawyer, the PET has already counted 400 ballots that were considered undervotes, or ballots that the PCOS machines had considered as unacceptable due to over-shading.

“The manual recount is faster than we expected probably because they ware only checking the votes for the vice president, and the verification is every easy. Out of the 400 ballots, Marcos had 307 votes and the rest for Robredo. For me, that’s already a huge difference. If this trend shall continue, and I believe it will, the vice president will be in a very, very big trouble.” Atty. Señales said.
