Aguirre to Run for Senator in 2019 Under LP, After Resigning as DOJ Chief

Former DOJ (Department of Justice) Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II will run for senator in the 2019 elections under the Liberal Party (LP), according to Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat Jr., LP’s vice president (VP) for internal affairs. This development came a day after he resigned from his post, with President Rodrigo Duterte accepting his resignation.

“Yes, finally, Aguirre is now among our senatorial candidates in 2019. We are very much excited to welcome him with open arms. He will be coming to our office soon for his oath-taking as member of LP.” Rep. Baguilat, who earlier said that Aguirre has been added in their list of senatoriables in 2019, said in a radio interview, Friday morning, April 6.

“As I have said earlier, LP strongly believes that Aguirre’s recent decisions in the DOJ are in line with the principles of the party. With him joining our senatorial line-up, we are confident that we can attract more personalities in our “resistance coalition. Tama na, sobra na!” He added, noting that their list is still incomplete and unofficial.

“I accepted the resignation of Vit Aguirre, my fraternity brother, as Secretary of Justice. I am now in the hustings looking for a replacement,” President Duterte said in a speech during the awarding of outstanding farmers, fisherfolk, and coastal communities in MalacaƱang on Thursday, without giving further details on Aguirre’s resignation.

The president’s announcement came a few hours after Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said there has been no indication that Duterte will fire Aguirre. The former DOJ secretary was even seen attending the Cabinet meeting last Wednesday, sitting beside the president. He was replaced by Menardo Guevarra, also on Thursday.

Aguirre, 71, used to be a member of LP before he was appointed as DOJ secretary. From 2013 to 2016, he served as Vice President and chief legal counsel of Clark Development Corporation under the administration of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. He also was a lawyer for Duterte, when he was still the mayor of Davao City.
