LP Adds Aguirre in Their List of Senatorial Candidates for 2019 Elections

The Liberal Party (LP) has added the name of DOJ (Department of Justice) Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II in their unofficial list of senatorial candidates for the 2019 midterm elections. This is after there were rumors that President Rodrigo Duterte fired Aguirre on Wednesday, April 4, during the 24th Cabinet meeting in MalacaƱang.

“Yes, we have already added the Justice Secretary as one of our potential senatorial candidates in 2019. But of course, it will be up to him to decide whether he will run under LP or not. So in case the PDP-Laban rejects him as their candidate, we are very much willing to accept him.” Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat Jr. told reporters this Thursday.

“The addition of his name was based on his recent actions, particularly in the cases of drug suspects Kerwin Espinosa and Peter Lim. We believe that Sec. Aguirre’s decision is in line with the principles of the party, that is, to free innocent people and jail the real criminals.” Baguilat, who is also LP’s vice president (VP) for internal affairs, added.

It can be recalled that last March, the DOJ released a resolution, dismissing the drug cases against Espinosa, Lim, and several others, and cited lack of evidence. But because of the uproar from the public, Aguirre said that he will immediately form a new panel of prosecutors that will review the case, and shall strengthen the evidences.

In addition, the DOJ has also placed alleged pork barrel scam mastermind Janet Lim-Napoles under the government’s Witness Protection Program (WPP). According to Aguirre that time, Napoles is not the “most guilty” in the PDAF scam because she is only a co-conspirator, and that she vowed to tell everything she know about the said case.

Meanwhile, Baguilat clarified that LP has still no official list of senatorial candidates in 2019, adding that they are still in talks with other parties for the “resistance coalition.” So far, only Senator Bam Aquino is sure to run under LP. Other possible candidates are former DILG Secretary Mar Roxas, Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano, and Rep. Baguilat.
