Robredo Apologizes for Holocaust Memorial Photo, Begs Germany to Lift Persona Non Grata

Vice President Leni Robredo finally apologized after she was heavily criticized for posing at the Holocaust Memorial, a memorial in Berlin dedicated to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust, a genocide during World War II that killed around 6 million Jews. She also begged the German government to lift the persona non grata against her.

“Gusto ko mag-apologize for offending the sensitivities of others. There was no excuse. While there was no malice in it, I take full responsibility kaya I would like to apologize for whatever offense to the sensitivities of the people," VP Robredo told reporters on Tuesday, April 17 in an ambush interview, adding that she also has apologized to Germany.

“Yesterday, I wrote a letter to the German embassy here in the Philippines and apologized to the German people who were offended by our action. I also requested them to allow us again to visit their beautiful country, and requested that their declaration of persona non grata against us be lifted.” The vice president added.

Aside from Robredo, also in included in the Holocaust Memorial photo are LP President, Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, QC Representatives Bolet Banal and Kit Belmonte, former Budget Secretary Butch Abad, Marikina City Rep. Miro Quimbo, Dinagat Islands Rep. Kaka Bag-ao, Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat, and three other LP members.

On Monday, Rep. Baguilat tweeted that he has already deleted the photo on Twitter, saying that they did not pose at the Holocaust Memorial not to demean the place. But after drawing flaw for not apologizing, he tweeted a few hours later and said he and the entire LP are sorry for their disrespectful act against the Holocaust victims.



“We, as human rights advocates, fully understand the plight experienced by Jews under the Nazis and we would be the last to disrespect their memory, in the same way that we condemn injustice anywhere in the world, including our own country. I apologize for this lapse in my post.” Baguilat, who is also LP’s vice president for internal affairs, tweeted.
