Robredo, LP Members Meet With Joma Sison in Netherlands, Baguilat Admits?

Some members of the Liberal Party (LP) met with Jose Maria 'Joma' Sison, the founder of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in the Netherlands. This is according to Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat, who apparently admitted in a reply to comment on his Facebook post with his photo while strolling the streets of Leiden, Netherlands.

“Went walking in the morning in Leiden, Netherlands and wow! ang linis ng canals and waterways nila. (Their canals and waterways are clean.)” Rep. Baguilat wrote on Facebook on Friday, April 13 as a caption to his selfie. He was among the LP members who went to Europe early this month to attend a series of meetings and forums.

Baguilat, who is LP’s VP for internal affairs, was part of the entourage of Vice President Leni Robredo in her Europe trip. Also included are LP President, Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, QC Representatives Bolet Banal and Kit Belmonte, Marikina City Rep. Miro Quimbo, Dinagat Islands Rep. Kaka Bag-ao, and former Budget Secretary Butch Abad.

In one of the comments to Baguilat’s post, a netizen wrote, “Wow Netherlands...regards to JOMA?” He was referring to Joma Sison who has been under self-exile in the Netherlands since 1987, shortly after the-President Corazon “Cory” Aquino released him from jail, citing "national reconciliation" and for Joma’s role in opposing Marcos.

“Yes going to Amsterdam today.” Baguilat replied, which led to speculations that he and some other LP members went to meet with Joma Sison. As of posting, the 79-year old CPP founder has neither confirmed nor denied if there was a meeting between him and VP Robredo and her fellow LP members. The group is now back in the Philippines.

Earlier, LP clarified that Robredo did not use the government’s money on her trip to Europe including Germany, but was rather hosted by Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF). The vice president also spoke at the London School of Economics (LSE), and discussed the current economic and political situation of the Philippines.
