"We refer to your letter tendering your resignation as Vice Mayor of Davao City. On behalf of President Rodrigo Duterte, this is to inform you that your resignation is hereby accepted, effective immediately," the letter reads. Later, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque also confirmed the president’s acceptance of his son’s resignation.
Based on Republic Act 5185 Section 7, Paolo Duterte will be replaced by Davao City Councilor Bernard Al-ag, who got the highest percentage of votes among the council members in the last elections. In an interview by CNN Philippines, Al-ag said he is not in favor of the vice mayor's resignation, but he is duty bound to accept the responsibility.
It can be recalled that last December 25, Paolo Duterte announced his resignation, and cited “delicadeza” over his word war a few days earlier with Isabelle, his 16-year old daughter from his first marriage. The presidential son also mentioned the controversial smuggling of P6.4-billion worth of drugs from China, wherein his name was dragged.
But while the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee led by Senator Richard “Dick” Godon cleared Paolo Duterte in the controversy, the Office of the Ombudsman has launched its own separate investigation that targets public officials, mentioning the Davao Group. Last December 29, he filed libel suits against Senator Antonio Trillanes IV.
Meanwhile, Malacañang sources said that President Duterte will appoint Paolo in a position in the national government. And although no further details were revealed, the former Davao City vice mayor is set to be appointed in a postion where his father had recently fired the sitting officials. Official announcement is expected within this month.
