Metro Manila Minimum Wage Earners Get P21 Increase, Bayan’s Renato Reyes Complains

The National Capital Region (NCR) Wage Board this Friday, September 15, 2017 has approved a P21-increase in salaries for minimum wage earners in Metro Manila. This is after the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) - NCR issued Wage Order NCR-21, increasing the minimum wage in Metro Manila from P491 to P512.

"Based upon the inputs from the stakeholders derived from public consultations and public hearing the RTWPB-NCR (Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board-NCR) has determined the need to increase the prevailing minimum wage rates without impairing the viability of business and industry.” A part of the order reads.

"The wage rates per day prescribed in this order shall apply to all minimum wage earners in the private sector in the region, regardless of their position, designation or status of employment and irrespective of the method which they are paid," It added. Three petitions were filed at the RTWPB-NCR before the salary increase was approved.

For non-agricultural workers in NCR, their minimum salary will now be P512 from the existing P481. For agricultural and private sector workers, they are set to receive P475, also a P21-increase from the prevailing P444. The implementation of this latest salary increase will be 15 days after its publication in a newspaper of general circulation.

Nevertheless, Bayan secretary-general Renato Reyes Jr. was quick to complain about this P21-salary increase. According to him, the said amount is by far still insufficient for the daily needs of NCR workers, as compared to fast-rising prices of basic commodities in the region. He added that the slightly higher than 4 percent increase means nothing.

“Ano ba ang mabibili ng bente pesos ngayon? Halatang nililibang lang tayo ng administrasyong ito. Akala kasi nila, magpapaloko tayo sa kakarampot na dagdag, na parang dapat na tanawin natin ito na isang malaking tulong na loob.” Reyes told reporters, adding that his group will include this issue in their protest rally on Thursday, September 21.
