"The movement of the cash within the Bank’s cash centers is an internal procedure, and as such, it does not need prior approval from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas," UCPB said in a statement this Tuesday, June 27 posted at Philippine News Agency, adding that "it is part of the normal procedure to move excess cash from one cash center to another."
According to UCPB, its legal team in CDO is now coordinating with port authorities to clarify the incident which they claim as “misunderstanding.” The bank was referring to the four men – two bank employees and two bank security guards, who were all in civilian clothes when they parked an armored car at the port in Barangay Macabalan last Sunday.
As reported earlier, the men asked for porters who can unload four stryrofoam boxes. One of them claimed himself as an employee of UCPB (United Coconut Planters Bank) Velez branch in Cagayan de Oro. But because the boxes look suspicious, the PCG ordered the boxes to be opened, and was shock to see that they contain P32 million in cold cash.
Meanwhile, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV appears to be in doubt with the PCG's statements. In an ambush interview this Wednesday, he suggested that a deeper investigation should be made. The soldier-turned-politician noted that abuses in power during Martial Law is inevitable, especially that it was declared by President Duterte.
"Alam na natin kung gaano kalakas ang impluwensya ng mamang ito (Duterte), kaya di ako magtataka kung maraming pulis at sundalo ang abusado ngayon, lalo na gitna ng gyera sa Marawi laban sa Maute group. Ako, naniniwala sa bangko sa sinasabi nilang normal ang ganung procedure. I know better pagdating sa money transfer." He said.
