"Our Catholic faith obliges us to refrain from patronizing, popularizing and supporting identified sources of ‘alternative facts’ or ‘fake news’. Refuse to be themselves purveyors of fake news and to desist from disseminating this whether on social media or by word of mouth or through any other form of public expression." A part of the CBCP letter reads.
The said pastoral letter did not mention that those alleged fake news sites were created by supporters of President Rodrigo Duterte. But earlier, the CBCP released a list of alleged fake news sites, in which many of them are legitimate news sites or blogs being managed by Duterte supporters. One of them is the famous blog, ThinkingPinoy.net by RJ Nieto.
In her open letter posted her Facebook account this Monday, June 26, Jenifer Aquino started by calling Archbishop Villegas as Mr. Villegas, saying that he does not deserve such recognition. The netizen questioned the CBCP president why the pastoral letter against fake news sites was part of the mass, which is supposed to be solemn.
"The government should start taxing the Church esp for real property. You have the audacity to chime in with the anti-duterte groups who get slammed on blog sites because people know the truth now. People are awake. People know better and people have seen the real colors of your masters as well as the real color of your snake skin.” She added.
Aquino also questioned why the CBCP has never criticized Rappler and Inquirer when these two mainstream media also report fake news. "You are not God and you will never be a "Cardinal Sin" to the people because you have shown your true color and it is yellow. The color of cowards, liars and hypocrites." She bravely wrote on the last part of her open letter.
