Ex Ateneo Dean Cites Similarity Between President Duterte and Jesse Robredo, VP Robredo Comments

President Rodrigo Duterte and the late DILG (Department of Interior and Local Government) Secretary Jesse Robredo have something in common, according to former Ateneo School of Government dean Tony La Viña. This is despite the fact that they belong to opposite political parties. With this, Vice President Leni Robredo could not help but comment.

"Only our President Duterte who was a mayor would go to as many wakes as he is doing. You know who I remember with what President Duterte is doing? Mayor Jesse Robredo." La Viña said during his presentation of the first year of the Duterte administration last Thursday, June 22, at the Ateneo Professional Schools Bldg in Rockwell, Makati.

"Robredo used to tell me one reason he won in all elections was because he would always, always attend in Naga City every wake, baptism, and baptism he was invited to.” The highly-respected laywer-educator added. He is the cousin of Peter Lavina, who was the campaign spokesperson of then-Mayor Duterte during the 2016 presidential election.

Jesse Robredo served as Naga City mayor for 19 years (1988-1988 and 2001-2010) before former President Benigno 'Noynoy' Aquino III appointed him as Interior secretary in July 2010. Similarly, Duterte served as mayor of Davao City also in 1988 until 1998, and also from 2001 to 2010. Nevertheless, he became mayor again from 2013 to 2016.

Last Friday, VP Leni Robredo was asked about her opinion on the observation of Professor La Viña. According to her, Jesse is very close to the people of Naga City during his time, and this habit of visiting wakes and occasions is one of her late husband's passion. She said she is happy that President Duterte is now also doing the same.

"Alam nyo, sanay ako kay Jessie na laging busy at pinagbibigyan nya ang mga paanyaya sa kanya. Ganun sya, di nya mahindihan ang mga tao. Nakakatuwa naman ang ating pangiulo ay ganun din. Kaya naman kahit mayroon mang kaming mga pagkakaiba sa prinsipyo at pananaw sa politika, hinahangaan ko pa rin sya." VP Robredo told reporters.
