Based on Table 1 of the February 11, 2015 Rappler report entitled 'Billions of Pesos in Church Funds Locked in Stocks,' the Archdiocese of Manila and its subsidiary companies parked in different companies listed in the PSE has stocks amounted to more than P30 billion as of December 29, 2014, including the P30-billion investment at BPI.
On the other hand, Table 2 showed the stock investments per archdiocese/diocese from Zamboanga, Jaro, Tuguegarao, Nueva Segovia, Sorsogon, and Butuan. You will also notice that the Catholic Church had previous stocks in some mining companies such as Philodrill, Philex Mining Corporation and its sister company, Philex Petroleum.
Meanwhile, the CBCP is now reviewing its list of alleged fake news sites which was re-published by Rappler last June 24. This is after owners of some of these websites categorically denied posting fake news. This includes RJ Nieto, who owns ThinkingPinoy.net, and is known for being a staunch supporter of President Rodrigo Duterte.
“We admit we only relied on the information that has been brought to us. This is why we are now re-reviewing those sites using a more appropriate set of standards.” CBCP President, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, who earlier released a pastoral letter against the spreading of fake news sites, told reporters this Tuesday.
"This time, we might include some mainstream news sites that are frequently posting unverified information and malicious opinions along with their reports." He added. When asked about Rappler's report about the investments of the Catholic Church, Archbishop Villegas said he will not hesitate to include the site if proven to have false information.
