EU Rejects VP Robredo’s Offer to Attend EU Summit as President Duterte’s Replacement

Vice President Leni Robredo said she is very much willing to take the place of President Rodrigo Duterte in the upcoming European Union (EU) summit, to be held in Brussels, Belgium this October. This is after the president declared that he is not interested to attend. However, the EU immediately rejected the offer of the vice president.

"[European Council President Donald] Tusk himself, the Commission and the Council invited me to Brussels. For what? If your opinion of me was like that, why change your assessment of my person?" President Duterte said in his speech during the 45th anniversary celebration of National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Tuesday, February 6.

"What am I supposed to do there? Ask me a question, insultuhin 'nyo ako, eh putahin ko kayo lahat doon (you insult me then miffed I will mess with all of you there)," he added, noting that he is not keen on accepting the invitation of EU to attend the 12th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), which will take place on October 18-19, 2018.

It can be recalled that last January, EU invited Duterte to attend the ASEM forum. According to EU ambassador to the Philippines Franz Jessen, EU would be very happy to see Duterte, considering that he has not yet visited any country in Europe since he was elected. He noted that Duterte will change his impression on EU once he attend the summit.

Meanwhile, VP Robredo said that it is very important that President Duterte to attend the EU Summit. But if he really does not want to, she will not hesitate to take his place.” Bakit naman hindi, kung papayagan tayo ng pangulo. Basta para sa ating bayan, kahit ano gagawin natin.” She told reporters in an ambush interview, Tuesday afternoon.

But almost at the same time, Jessen reiterated that it is Duterte that the EU wants to meet. According to him, the said summit is a meeting of world leaders and sending a representative is not allowed. “EU respects the offer of everyone regardless of political issues, but we have rules to follow.” He told reporters at Kapihan sa Manila forum.

  1. It will only worsen the situation if EU leaders will ask an insulting questions or delivers undesirable phrase by any of the leaders attending, though it is true the OFWs in Europe wants to meet The President as he did to some other countries in asia! OFW wants to see him here but, trouble might burst out if EU will insult our dearest President!

  3. It would be a big embarrassment if an important query is asked of Leni and she won’t be able to fulfill the answer knowledgeably.
