Alejano Slams Duterte’s Second Extension of PNP Chief Bato Dela Rosa’s Term, “Sobra Na!”

President Rodrigo Duterte has again extended the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa for a few more months. But while the PNP chief is happy for his second extension of term, Magdalo Rep. Gary Alejano does not disagree with it, and even described President Duterte’s decision as “too much.”

“The PNP [chief] now, who’s supposed to retire on the 24th of April, and because he enjoys my trust and confidence, I will extend his term for a little bit longer, for enough reforms to get hold,” President Duterte said on Tuesday, during the induction of the new board of directors of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce Phils. Inc.

"I still have to institute continuing reforms with the police. And the police has always been a problem. But they are not that many. There are scoundrels, scalawags in every organization." He added. PNP Chief Bato dela Rosa was supposed to retire last January 21, but President Duterte extended his term until April last December.

As a response, PNP Chief Bato dela Rosa said on Wednesday that he is happy to continue his work and that the President Duterte still trusts him, noting that he cannot say “No” to him because he owes him a lot. But at the same time, he said he is also somehow sad that his plans for retirement was temporarily postponed.

"As I have said, I am willing to serve under him until my last breath. Hindi ako aayaw, hangga't kinakailangan niya ako, andito lang ako na magtatrabaho. Hindi ako pwedeng humindi napakalaki ang utang na loob ko sa ating Presidente.” Bato told reporters. He is set to head the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) after his formal retirement.

But a few hours later, Rep. Gary Alejano also talked to reporters, saying that President Duterte’s decision to extend the term of PNP Chief Bato dela Rosa for the second time is too much. According to him, Dela Rosa does not deserve it because he cannot handle the pressure of handling his men, and that it is unfair for his successor.

“Sobra na! Una, alam naman nating lahat na hindi niya kayang pasunurin ang mg heneral na nauna sa kanya. Pati nga hanggang sa pinakababang posisyon ng pulis, hindi niya ma-kontrol ng maayos. Kung hindi sangkot sa drugs, natutulog on duty. Isa pa, kawawa naman yung papalit sa kanya, mababawasan ang term.” Alejano said.
