Former DOH Secretary Garin Celebrates Birthday With LP, Night Before She Appeared on Senate Hearing?

Today, Monday, December 11 is the birthday of former DOH (Department of Health) Secretary Janette Garin. Incidentally, she is now in the on-going Senate hearing on the controversial dengue vaccine program under the past administration. However, she allegedly celebrated her birthday with some members of the Liberal Party (LP), the night before.

According to several Facebook posts, Garin was spotted entering a high-class restaurant in Bonifacio Global City (BGC) in Taguig at around 9:30 pm, Sunday. After more than 1 hour, some top LP members allegedly entered the same restaurant. Some netizens claimed that the former DOH secretary had a simple and private birthday party with them.

In addition, the netizens who saw Garin claimed that there were several cars parked near the said restaurant, and that every time someone gets off the car, he is being accompanied by ‘bodyguards.’ However, they said that the area was dark and the faces of Garin’s visitors could not be seen, except that most of them are wearing yellow shirts.

Garin, who just turned 45, was the DOH secretary from February 17, 2015 to June 30, 2016, as appointed by then President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III. Apparently, she is now in the hot seat over the health concerns regarding the Dengvaxia dengue vaccine, purchased during the Aquino administration, when she was still the DOH secretary.

This is after its manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur issued a health advisory last month, saying that vaccination should not be recommended to children who have not previously infected by dengue virus, and that more cases of severe disease could occur to them. This led to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to stop the P3.5-billion dengue vaccination program.

That time, Duque said that more than more than 700,000 Filipino children have been vaccinated since its launch in April 2016. Later reports said that the figure has already reached to over 800,000, excluding those who were vaccinated in private hospitals. Meanwhile, Garin has categorically denied accusations that the implementation was rushed.
