Watch: Doris Bigornia Not Wearing Seat Belt During EDSA Shaw Blvd Road Accident (Video)

ABS-CBN news reporter Doris Bigornia and five others were hurt in a six-vehicle pileup accident at the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA)-Shaw Boulevard tunnel in Mandaluyong City, on Thursday at around 1:45 p.m., December 21. She was seated at the back of their van when the crash happened, and apparently not wearing a seat belt. Watch video below.

According to Bong Nebrija, supervising officer for operations of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), a Montero Sport with plate number PQS 314 suddenly ran so fast and jumped over the median and hit a red Toyota Vios on the southbound lane. The impact led to several other collisions involving a Mitsubishi Mirage, another Montero Sport, a motorcycle, and the ABS-CBN van.

“The Montero Sport experienced sudden unintended acceleration (SUA). It went fast, suddenly accelerating,” Nebrija said. Aside from Bigornia and her cameraman named Marcopolo Gutierrez, he said that the others who were injured include the motorcycle driver, the driver and passenger of a Toyota Vios and the passenger of the Montero Sport. Luckily, most of them suffered minor injuries only.

“The traffic jam on EDSA southbound stretched all the way back to Kamuning Road (Quezon City) while the northbound traffic reached all the way to Ayala Avenue Makati City),” Nebrija added, noting that the MMDA is now in close coordination with the Eastern Police District - Traffic Management Office in conducting a deeper investigation if the incident is really caused by the SUA problem of Montero Sport.

Meanwhile, Doris Bigornia suffered a cut on her forehead after she hit it somewhere inside the cab due to the impact of the collision. She was brought to The Medical City in Pasig and is reported to have sustained a head injury but is not in critical condition. In her interview with Nebrija, Bigornia said her body aches, and admitted that she was not wearing a seat belt at that time.

But while we at Philippine News Courier hope that everybody including Doris Bigornia to get well soon, we also hope the problem of Montero SUA incidents will eventually be solved. But more importantly, we hope this incident will serve as a lesson to every vehicle passenger to always wear seat belt, even if you are not at the front seat. Prevention is always better than cure.
