Al Jazeera's Pinay Journalist Jamela Alindogan Questions AirAsia's Free Extra Baggage for AFP Soldiers

As recognition for the bravery and sacrifices of Filipino soldiers, AirAsia Philippines decided to give them free extra baggage and meals during the flight. But while the government and netizens were happy for the kindness of the airlines, Pinay journalist Jamela Alindogan, who now works at Al Jazeera appears to disagree with the idea.

"We recognize the incredible sacrifices of our military heroes and the Bayanihan spirit among Filipinos." AirAsia Philippines CEO Capt. Dexter Comendador said on the airline’s official Facebook page on Wednesday night, July 19. Comendador is a member of Philippine Military Academy Class of 1982, and is a former military pilot as well.

"The incident has inspired many including us and we would like to announce that AirAsia will extend free baggage allowance of up to 40kgs including in-flight meals and snacks to all AFP military personnel on a peace-keeping mission to any of our flights upon presentation of their official ID and mission order effective immediately." He added.

Apparently, AirAisa's kind gesture was believed to have decided following a viral Facebook post by a certain Inday Rakel. According to her, she met 3 AFP soldiers were about to board an AirAsia flight bound to Marawi. But because of one of them had 7 kilos excess baggage that he cannot leave. Without any hesitation, fellow passengers did a Bayanihan.

However, Jamela Alindogan don't seem to understand the point of AirAisa to help the AFP soldiers. "I dnt get these airlines giving free 40kg to soldiers frm Marawi. What are they expected to bring back apart from their own bag of belongings?" She tweeted, Friday. Alindogan was an ABS-CBN reporter for 2 years before making it to Al Jazeera English in 2008.

As expected, Pinoy netizens were outraged with her tweet. This includes a certain Sgt. Jose Emmanuel Sison, who replied to her tweet. "I am a soldier and an officer of the AFP. Do you have any idea how much our basic deployment packs weigh?" He tweeted. As of posting, the Sorsogon-born and FEU alumni producer-journalist has not responded yet.
