Watch: Tanauan Walk of Shame 17 Year Old Suspect of Stealing Plastic Admits Using Drugs, CHR Reacts (Video)

A 17-year old boy was featured in Tanauan's Walk of Shame this Tuesday, July 3, as per ordered by Tanauan City Mayor Antonio 'Thony' Halili. Local officials accompanied the unnamed suspect, while he was parading the city streets and market, bearing a sign, "Ako'y magnanakaw, huwag tularan (I'm a thief, don't be like me).” Watch video below.

According to GMA News, the teengage boy was caught after he stole plastic inside the Tanauan City market. Besides the print, the suspect was also required to bring along with him the plastic that he allegedly stole. Later, he and his mother were brought to Mayor Halili's office, where he admiited that he has been stealing and talking shabu for 3 weeks.

"Ipinapakita natin 'yan dun sa mga tao kung sino yung mga dapat nilang iwasan. Ngayon, kung pinabayaan mo nang pinabayaan hindi nakukulong e, uulit lang nang uulit. (We showed him to the public so they know who they should avoid. Now, if we will always let them be and will not jail them, they will continue doing their habit.)” The tough mayor said.

In an interview with GMA News, the teenager denied the accusations, noting that someone only set him up. He said he was already on his way home when a person whom he did not identify, pointed him to the police as the one who stole the plastic. However, he admitted in front of Mayor Halili that he bought illegal drugs from a certain Suno from Barangay 4.

But because of Republic Act 9344 (also known as the Juvenile Justice Welfare Act of 2006, authored by Sen. Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan), which states that persons under 15 will not be held criminally liable, the suspect is now under the custody of the DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development), instead of going to jail.

According to the suspect's mother, she has been reminding his son to stay away from drugs, adding that his father is working hard so he can go to school. Meanwhile, Jackielou Pera of the CHR (Commission on Human Rights) Calabarzon, condemned this latest 'Walk of Shame. “This is totally unforgivable. What kind of future will the boy now have?” She said.
